2008 Veterans & Military Summit
Hosted by Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz
Nov. 1, 2008
9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
American Bank Center Convention Center
Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz (TX-27) announced that he will host his
annual Coastal bend Veterans and Military Summit on November 1, 2008 at
the American Bank Center.
This summit, held in conjunction with the City of Corpus
Christi, will include workshops with VA Representatives on
benefits/enrollment, business, education, health and mental health, and
transitional assistance; as well as exhibits providing services to
veterans in the areas of: employment, education, health care, social
services, business, housing, and transportation. There will also be a
Job Fair and Health Fair offering free glaucoma screenings, free blood
pressure screenings, and many other services for veterans.
For six years, Congressman Ortiz has organized these summits in
South Texas to provide veterans a "one-stop shop" to navigate the
numerous services available to them and to receive updates on
Congressional issues affecting both veterans and the military. These
summits are free for area veterans, service members and their families,
and will provide a wide array of services and information.
"This summit provides an excellent opportunity for area
veterans and active duty members to meet with people who can offer
detailed explanations of the services available to them in the Coastal
Bend," Ortiz said. "One of the main priorities is to get an accurate
count of area veterans so the government can provide the proper
services."
Congressman Ortiz, who serves as the Readiness Subcommittee
Chairman on the House Armed Services Committee, has represented the
Coastal Bend region for 26 years. With a large veteran population and
four area military installations, Corpus Christi serves as the ideal
location for the summit. Numerous active duty military service members,
along with their families, live in the Coastal Bend. Corpus Christi
Army Depot, the nation's premier rotary wing repair facility, also
employs many veterans.
As a veteran of the U.S. Army, Congressman Ortiz understands
the need for veterans to have access to health care, business
opportunities, and education. The military provided Congressman Ortiz,
the child of a migrant father who lost his father at the age of 16, an
opportunity to support his family and begin his career in public
service. Now, he is providing the opportunity for those who served
their country to better their lives and receive the services they
deserve.

Gallery Talk by 3rd Coast National
Juror, Josh MacPhee
Thursday,
November 6th, 7:00 pm
New York Artist and Writer Josh MacPhee
will speak on the works selected for K Space Contemporary’s Third Coast
National Exhibition. MacPhee
states, “ Aesthetically I'm attracted to
printmaking, bright colors, and bricolage. As for content, I like my art
political. I like artwork that teaches me something about the world I'm living
in through engaging and making vivid compelling ideas. If I could have, I would
have included pieces from every artist that submitted work to the show, and not
because I liked or enjoyed each individual piece, but because I like the
cacaphony of voices, the multiplicity of styles, aesthetics, and content
jockeying for our eyes and attention.”
This event is free to the public, and donations are always welcome.
Funded in part by The Omni Hotel of

Cyanotype Workshop
Saturday, November 8th, 10am - 1pm
Instructor: Judith Curiel
COST: $25 members / $30 non-members
The cyanotype process was one of the first photographic processes. It was discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842 by using paper that had been coated with light sensitive iron salts rather than traditional darkroom silver. The process uses contact printing and either a large negative or materials with interesting shapes such as leaves, jewelry or other items placed on the sensitized paper. After exposure in sunlight, the dark blue image reveals itself by development in water.
During the morning workshop, we will be working with 8 x 10 watercolor paper which has been pre-sensitized. Participants may bring their own materials and shapes (leaves, jewelry) to create their image OR a large film negative, digital negative printed on acetate, or drawing on acetate. Each person will receive 2 sheets of the watercolor paper and more will be available for an additional charge of $1.50 per sheet.
Please contact me ahead of the workshop with any questions you might have at jdcuriel@aol.com or call 887-6834.
Please call 361.887.6834 to reserve your spot.

1115 E. Main Street - Alice
Event Details: Few shows evoke an audience’s sense of
romanticism, nostalgia, and musical revelry the way SIMPLEMENTE LARA
does. This critically acclaimed performance, featuring San Antonio
actor-musician José Rubén De León, is a dramatic revue that pays
tribute to Agustín Lara, Mexico’s most celebrated composer of the 1930s
and 40s. The show has enjoyed incredible success throughout Texas,
selling out venues and extending runs due to high interest. Now, Mr. De
León will bring SIMPLEMENTE LARA to American Bank Center Selena
Auditorium on November 8th at 7:00pm.
De León says the show creates a “wonderful opportunity to
showcase the music of Mexico’s Golden Age, appealing to the Hispanic
community and to all who love romantic music.” Accompanied by the
father and son duo of bassist George Prado and Pianist Aaron Ellington
Prado, he offers masterful renditions of popular Agustín Lara songs
such as “Veracruz,” “Noche de ronda” and “Solamente una vez.” Audience
members are often moved to tears, while many have spontaneously sung
along to encore selections. Still others sit back to take in the
soulful sounds of the music and De León’s voice which reviewers have
described as “an attractive, velvety baritone flecked with a faint
burr.”
SIMPLEMENTE LARA is an intimate musical tribute that moves
beyond the realm of a simple revue by skillfully interweaving stories
from Lara’s intriguing life. A bohemian artist and prolific composer
with over 600 songs to his credit, Lara provided the soundtrack for an
era. He began piano lessons at age 6 but parted ways with his
frustrated instructor because he wanted to play the improvisations
already stirring in his head. His musical career began as a teenager
playing piano in a bordello and later moved to the international stage
after turning out a vast collection of popular tunes, many featured in
Mexican cinema. Along the way, Lara gathered the material for his heart
wrenching love songs throughout seven marriages, one to the great
Mexican film star María Félix. These are some of the many anecdotes
shared and dramatized by De León, clad in evening clothes on the
elegant, cabaret-like set of SIMPLEMENTE LARA.
Simplemente Lara is sponsored by the Instituto de Cultura
Hispanica de Corpus Christi, a cultural organization created by
citizens of South Texas in 1976 who have a common interest in the
enhancement and promotion of Spanish culture. Among the goals of the
organization are to promote the culture and history of Spain,
Phillippines, Central America and South America in the United States
and to promote education through the educational outreach program, the
Museum of Hispanic Culture and endowment funds established at Del Mar
College and Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.
Proceeds from the concert will go towards endowment funds at
both Del Mar College and Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi.

Who: The
Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra (CCSO), Maestro John Giordano (CCSO music
director and conductor), and Curt Thompson, violinist
What: The CCSO presents a classical concert inspired
by the USA, with music by
Ives/Schuman, Mendelssohn and Dvorak, and featuring American violinist Curt
Thompson
When: Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Where: The Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, 6300 Ocean Drive
Why: CCSO concertmaster Curt Thompson performs one
of the most popular, virtuosic and frequently performed violin concertos of all
time while the CCSO pays homage to the New World with music
inspired by the USA. Dvorak’s New World Symphony was written while
the composer resided in New York from 1892-1895,
and was influenced by American folk and spiritual melodies he became acquainted
with during that time. Variations on “America” is based on the
patriotic hymn “America the Beautiful” and
was written by organ virtuoso Charles Ives in 1892, when he was eighteen, as a
work for organ. In 1963, William Schuman
created the orchestral version. Its
first performance was in 1964, by the New York Philharmonic. For complete program notes, see the Education
and Outreach section of the CCSO’s website at www.ccsymphony.org/program_notes.cfm.
How: Tickets start at $20 and may be purchased by phone (883-6683 or toll
free at 877-286-6683), or on the web (www.ccsymphony.org
). For more information, visit www.ccsymphony.org.
